Stressing on the need for the Pharmacy graduates to come out of the conventional mind-set of searching for jobs and working in Industry soon after completion of their education, Dr V G Somani, Drug Control General of India (DCGI), urged the young and fresh graduates to focus their energies towards becoming entrepreneurs and set-up start up companies.

The DCGI while taking part in the second national pharmaceutical sciences in Warangal, said that today Indian pharmacy industry is growing at a faster rate and India’s drug market share in the world is more than 40 per cent. “Today Indian pharma industry has its presence across the global markets; India has a considerable market share of more than 40 per cent in US, Europe, Japan and Africa. In the coming days, the demand for high quality and affordable new medicines will be very high. Moreover in this changing digital era, there are fast changing regulations and the medical technology is also changing rapidly. The pharmacy graduates must focus to compete against the chaining medical technologies and begin new start-ups in these areas, where there is a huge potential of growth,” said the DCGI.

He also stressed that there is a huge demand for the pharmacy graduates not just in India but also abroad, however they need to select their specific field and develop skills and expertise in those sectors, which would help them to get good career opportunities.

The Pharmacy Council of India president Dr B Suresh also stressed that the pharmacy students soon after completion of their studies must make their minds to choose the best fields to suit their interests. “Usually pharmacy graduates who pass out are in a dilemma as to which filed they should choose as their career. With fast changing regulatory reforms both at the national and international levels, the students must regularly update their knowledge and can decided to go either towards Industry, academic research or skill development. For the students to get the real research knowledge it is better shun the regular process of thesis submission as a norm and must focus on real time research with appropriate mechanism to enable them to carryout research in Industry right from their academic level,” observed the PCI president.

Leading industry experts like Madan Mohan Reddy, managing director of Aurobindo Pharma, Dr. Krishna Ella, chairman and managing director of Bharat Biotech and others stressed that India’s pharmaceutical industry is contributing more than 15 per cent towards India’s economy and with new avenues and opportunities available for the pharmacy professionals this would further increase in the coming days, they said.
